What do you love about your cat?
Peter is the sweetest cat. I’m going to cry, also he’s the gangster cat. He hangs out outside and protects the house. He fights dogs that come in the yard. He sits on the edge of our yard and doesn’t flinch at dogs when they walk by and bark or come into our yard.
Who made the lost cat poster?
My husband did. He went missing after being displaced by the recent fires in Spokane. My little sister lives in valley and that is where Peter got lost. We stayed with her after we had to evacuate. We hung up posters by my sister’s apartment. I also posted on lost and found pets pages online.
Why did you name your cat Peter?
We got the name from my son who was 3 at the time. He Loved the Book, Pete the Cat. Peter is named after that book. We call him Peter and Pete.
What has your cat taught you that has surprised you?
I think I’m a little spiritual, so I’d say energy. I’ve been working through some trauma. I had been feeling some energy in my chest and Pete would often come over and lay right on my chest. It felt like he sucked in what I was holding. I think he can sense when I’m off. He can tell when I’m going through something. None of my other cats do this.

What happened?
We were camping when the fires in Spokane happened. We are in the evacuation zone and ended up coming back home from camping. My husband came down on a lime scooter into the neighborhood to save the cats, and he grabbed them the next day. We have three cats, Peter, Mowgli, and Murray. We rescued Pete from Scraps 9 years ago.
We had been at my sister’s house in the Valley for about a week. On the 8th he got outside as my sister was going to work. Since he is an outdoor and indoor cat she just figured he would come back. He’s used to being outside at home. He hasn’t’ been seen since.
After we returned home to our neighborhood, we’ve gone over to her house looking several times. She lives in an Apartment complex. There are lots of cats outside her apartment. There is a neighbor who works for scraps nearby. We spoke to a lot of people and put up posters. I feel like we would have seen him by now.
Is your cat an indoor and outdoor cat?
He’s always been an outdoor cat. He tries to get outside. When we first rescued him we tried to keep him inside, but he kept wanting to go out. Our other cat Mowgli was born outside and has always wanted to be outside. We let them in and out all the time. Sometimes they sleep outside, but mostly they are inside at night.
Does Pete have any relationships with other animals?
Yes. He’s really close with our other outdoor cat Mowgli. Peter and Mowgli are both outdoor cats and would come in and out together. He does not like my Maine Coon cat Murray.
Does your cat have any special abilities/psychic powers?
Not really. One thing he does that’s special is he shows up at the right time.
How would you describe your cat’s personality?
He’s pretty mellow. He likes to relax. When he’s outside, he likes to sit in my chair I have out there, and he tries to get you out of it. He lays around in the grass a lot. I think he thinks he’s a model; he’s always in a pose. He definitely likes to be by himself too when he’s out there.
Why did you decide to talk with me?
In the hope of finding my cat. I’m also offering a reward of $250 for his return. I had a guy who contacted me and told me he found my cat, but he just wanted the reward and didn’t have Peter. It’s hard, how do you know who to trust?
Does your cat remind you of any people in your life?
Not really. He is his own personality. Also, I want people to know that he’s grey, not black. He’s dark grey. Someone contacted me about our poster, but it ended up not being Peter. It was a lost black cat.
What’s something to know about your neighborhood?
It’s quiet. There are lots of trees. It feels like a little cozy area down in a little valley.
What kinds of things do you notice about your cat?
He’s protective and intuitive. He’s almost like a dog. He guards our home like a dog does. We have a poodle that visits the neighborhood and runs into our yard sometimes. Pete will be laying on porch and then he’ll run out onto the grass, charging at the dog. The dog has been taken aback. One time Pete even whacked at the dog in defense and the dog fled our yard!
What do you think about the idea that cat’s have nine lives?
I believe that. I think it’s different than what we perceive it to be. I think it’s more a spiritual thing having nine lives, not literal. I feel like Peter has had a lot of lives in his cat lifetime.
